What is a mentor and how to pick one?

Mentorship is a mutually beneficial professional relationship in which an experienced individual (the mentor) imparts knowledge, expertise and wisdom to a less experienced person (the mentee), while simultaneously honing their mentoring skills. An effective mentor can professionally guide the mentee while maintaining a friendly and supportive relationship. A mentor should always have the mentee’s best interests in mind and tailor their mentorship style to meet the needs of the mentee.

A mentor’s knowledge is like “gold,” some would say and this is quite true. But the real mentors impart knowledge that lasts a lifetime more than gold can afford.

Anyone looking for a mentor for their e-commerce business should keep these three things in mind:

  • Define what you want out of your business and what you need to learn to get there.

  • Approach a mentor relationship as if it’s a business friendship – be casual and friendly, and try not to ask weird questions like, “Will you be my mentor?”

  • Create boundaries between what is "professional" to what is "personal."

  • Start with your own professional network and go about from there. We often already have mentors who provide advice in various ways, and all it takes is a little effort from us to grow that connection into an ongoing relationship.

A mentee should also know what his or her goals are. In this manner, there is a direction on the purpose of the mentorship and expectations are stated.

If you are unsure yet of which direction to go with your business, www.startitupmetoring.com can definitely help you out in narrowing down objectives and goals for a kickstart. Book now for our mentorship programs!
