Rethinking Life Events & Empowering Your Path

Life throws different challenges our way – from the joy of a new baby to the sorrow of losing a loved one, and everything in between. The conventional job world often lacks the flexibility needed for these personal events. Corporate policies might limit maternity leave to a mere 8 weeks or provide just 5 days for bereavement. The question arises: Is that enough time? Well, it depends on the individual and how they navigate through these life-altering moments. But what if the prescribed time off doesn't align with personal needs? Sure, the suggestion could be to find another job with better policies, but reality often makes that easier said than done.

Let's explore an alternative perspective – the idea of creating your own business. Imagine having the autonomy to decide when to take time off for significant life events and determining the duration based on personal needs. I count myself fortunate to have such flexibility, yet there's still a lingering pressure to swiftly return to work. It's time we reconsider this mindset and reimagine how we approach life events, acknowledging their impact on mental well-being and allowing individuals the necessary time to heal.

Reflecting on my own recent losses that have cast a shadow on my mood over the past couple of months, I realize how challenging it can be. While work served as a distraction during the day, the nights were a struggle. It made me question whether my coping mechanism was the right way, and more importantly, whether it would work for others.

Today, I'm contemplating a collective effort to do better. This might involve businesses adopting a more compassionate approach to employee schedules during times of grief. Admittedly, I don't have all the answers yet, and I'm still navigating what this might look like for myself, especially as my team expands. However, I'm convinced there must be a better way to support new parents, offering more than the standard 3-month maternity leave in the U.S., or providing a meager few days for grieving the loss of someone profoundly significant.

In essence, it's about reevaluating how we allow individuals to experience life events.

Striking the right balance is always a challenge, but forging your path becomes more feasible when you work for yourself. That's why I believe in encouraging individuals, especially women, to explore entrepreneurship. Running your own business provides the opportunity to shape an environment that resonates with your personal values and feels right for your unique journey. Let's think beyond the conventional norms and create workplaces that nurture the well-being of individuals during life's inevitable challenges.
